Ten Steps to Fundraising Success: Choosing the Right Strategy for Your Organization (With CD-ROM)
Published in Paperback by Jossey-Bass (15 September, 2001)
Authors: Mal Warwick and Stephen Hitchcock
Average review score:

An essential guide for every not-for-profit
I was extremely impressed with the content and format! I have read other fundraising books and found the ten steps to be one of the best, a necessary guide for anyone involved in a not-for-profit organization's operations. It concisely captures the necessary fundamentals involved in successfully empowering an organization. The CD-ROM was a great bonus and it was quite easy to manuever through the comprehensive worksheets and exercises - I especially liked "Evaluating your Executive Director" and the other assessment tools. I highly recommend this guide!

Thinking Critically About Research Methods
Published in Paperback by Pearson Education POD (21 December, 1993)
Author: John Grant Benjafield
Average review score:

Meat on the bones
This book simply overflows with personality. Benjafield's guided tour through the methods of research is replete with examples that not only illuminate but also captivate. The book is an exemplary teaching/learning model, beginning with responses to some basic "why should I care?" sorts of questions and a list of psychology's top 100 concepts to pique your interest. From there, his clear and informative writing has you virtually arm-in-arm on an eager exploration through practical issues such as design, control and power, regression, sources of data, and "been there, done that" anecdotes from classical instances in the history of research methods. His pages are filled with critical thinking questions and intriguing examples and ideas, as well as abundant and informative graphics. Each chapter, or even particular sections of chapters, can be profitably used in isolation from the rest of the text, assigned in different sequence, or developed into the basis for a research project. Qualitative and quantitative methods are equally considered as parts of the whole in research, with essential statistical concepts explained in a manner that does not intimidate but rather provokes that "aha!" experience of understanding. Whether as a primary text in a conceptual course, a supplemental text, or a refreshingly insightful journey into pleasure, I most highly recommend this book.

Third Time Around: The History of the Pro-Life Movement from the First Century to the Present
Published in Paperback by Word Publishing (February, 1991)
Author: George Grant
Average review score:

History in perspective
Third Time Around, by George Grant, is by far the most thorough and scholarly account, that I have seen, of heroes through the centuries. Their stories teach us that the the struggle to preserve life never ends. Many of these men and women sacrificed lives of comfort or luxury to follow their calling. Others used their authority, influence, or affluence to bring about changes that saved lives. Many were martyred. You will be amazed at how many times victory has been won for the unwanted, only to see them threatened again in another time or under another ruler. That it has been won so many times before should be an encouragement to all who love babies, the handicapped, and others of the most vulnerable among us!

This Is Our Work: The Legacy of Sir William Osler
Published in Hardcover by Ted Grant Photography Limited (01 December, 1994)
Author: Ted Grant
Average review score:

True documentary photojournalism
Ted Grant is one of Canada's premier photojournalists. He became interested in the medical world after his own surgery, and began documenting life in the medical profession.

Sir William Osler could be thought of as the philisophical founder of modern medicine, and this book is filled with quotes from Dr. Osler and others in the profession. The pictures capture, in black and white, what the ideals of the medical professions (nurses, doctors, etc.) look like in daily practice.

Superb reproduction and powerful images go together to produce a book that really captures, with insight and compassion, Osler's legacy. Mr. Grant maintains, with this work, his place at the top of the profession of photojournalism.

A must-have for doctors' coffee tables, and for anyone who loves true documentary photojournalism. Just make sure those tables are strong, this one big book!

Tinker in Television: From General Sarnoff to General Electric
Published in Hardcover by Simon & Schuster (September, 1994)
Authors: Grant Tinker and Bud Rukeyser
Average review score:

From MTM to NBC
This book is the story of Grant Tinker, from his rise from a junior executive at NBC in 1949 to his rise to the presidency of the peacock network after the resignation of Fred Silverman in 1981. This book chronicles the television industry through the eyes of one of its own major players. It is a very good book for those who wish to become executives in the fast going world of television. He goes into great detail over his personal life with Mary Tyler Moore and his involvement into the MTM Enterprises programs, and his years as president of NBC and his ventures after he left NBC in 1986. This book is a must read for anybody who loves the history of television or would like to work in television.

Tips to Fly by (Thomasson-Grant Aviation Library)
Published in Hardcover by Aviation Supplies & Academics (March, 1993)
Authors: Richard L. Collins and Eleanor Friede
Average review score:

Insight From Experience, Great Price..Skip the Videos
As a private pilot, I have purchased video tapes etc. from one of the more popular pilot supply houses where Mr. Collins hosts the many video titles under the vendor's name. In them he shares his long experience on the different phases of flight such as Descent and Landing, Takeoff and Initial Climb, Enroute Climb and Cruise, Other titles and topics, Multi Engine, Emergencies, High Performance Singles, Night Flying and more. This book covers the same richness of experience shared on those videos for alot less expense. The videos sell for over twenty dollars each. This book covers the same (sometimes the same verbage) material for less than the cost of one of those videos. For those who want to save a bundle of cash, benefit from the wisdom of Mr. Collins; buy this book.

"Over five decades ago, I made the first journeys recorded in this book. Now that this half-century is over, I am freed from the promises made then to avoid certain names and topics."

Through Grant, we meet both the aged wife of a courtier of the Turkish Sultan, and a close associate of Ataturk, creator of modern secular Turkey, among many other fascinating characters. And, we travel with him on a Sufi mission to advise groups that have mistaken habit and emotion for the search for truth.

Twelve Days of Christmas: A Celebration and History
Published in Hardcover by DIANE Publishing Co (June, 1995)
Author: Leigh Grant
Average review score:

The Illustrations Are Worth The Cost Of Admission!
We all know the 12 Days of Christmas, but in this book, it's the illustrations that rule the day. Especially wonderful if you are a lover of the Mastiff or Italian Greyhound Breed. Also includes some interesting history of the Song and Time it was written - but it's the illustrations that will bring you back to this book all year long.
